The study used a computational model resembling the human hippocampus and neocortex’s neural networks, in order to simulate memory encoding and retrieval. Both the hippocampus and neocortex are believed to work together during memory, imagination, and planning. The study also provided new insights into the human memory’s role in survival, predicting future events, and comprehending memory distortions.
“Recent advances in the generative networks used in AI show how information can be extracted from experience so that we can both recollect a specific experience and also flexibly imagine what new experiences might be like,” explained lead author of the study, and Ph.D. student Eleanor Spens. “We think of remembering as imagining the past based on concepts, combining some stored details with our expectations about what might have happened.”
The researchers pointed out that humans need to make predictions in order to survive, such as being able to avoid hunger, or get out of a dangerous situation. The AI networks seem to suggest how, while remembering past experiences during rest periods, could help the human brain to pick up on patterns from past experiences that could provide insight into making survival predictions.
Spens noted, “We think of remembering as imagining the past based on concepts, combining some stored details with our expectations about what might have happened.”
During the study, researchers displayed 10,000 images of simple scenes to the computational model. The hippocampal neural network was able to quickly encode each scene as it was experienced. The model then replayed the scenes repeatedly to train the generative neural network of the neocortex as well.
The neocortical network’s ability to learn to pass the activity of thousands of input neurons, representing each scene via smaller intermediate layers of neurons that recreate the scenes as patterns of activity in its output neurons, helped the neocortical network to learn “highly efficient conceptual representations” of the scenes that capture their meaning. This allowed for the recreation of old scenes and the generation of new scenes.
The researchers added that the model was able to explain how new events can be generated during imagination and planning for future events.
“The way that memories are re-constructed, rather than being verdical records of the past, shows us how the meaning or gist of an experience is recombined with unique details, and how this can result in biases in how we remember things,” remarked senior author Professor Neil Burgess of the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.

Guided imagery harnesses our brain's natural tendency to create vivid mental representations of our beliefs, desires, experiences and goals. It's also a simple, inexpensive, and powerful tool for soothing symptoms and creating positive change.
Many famous athletes choreograph their moves in imagery before going into action. For example, champion skiers imagine themselves negotiating almost every inch of a slope, champion tennis players picture themselves executing successful shots, and ballerinas and gymnasts will practice their moves as much in imagination as in actual rehearsal.
What this is getting at is very simple but extremely effective. That is, if you really wish to succeed at something, picture yourself doing it successfully over and over again.
Obviously, this refers to visualizing success that lies within your reach. You will not succeed in doing the impossible no matter how much imagery you practice.

Meditation is usually seen as the perfect way for you to have that precious peaceful time with yourself. In the context of such predisposition, the thought of family meditation might not make much sense.
However, if you dig deeper into the meaning of this ancient tradition, you realize that it doesn't have to be solitary. On the contrary, many masters would advocate against “practicing in the vacuum.” It's easy to stay calm and focused while you sit on your special cushion in your sound-proofed room or savor the majestic views from the top of the mountain.
Dealing with distractions coming from the presence of others is only one of many perks of meditating in the circle of your family. This will undoubtedly help you grow as an individual.

The more we learn about how to change our brains and those of others, the more we need to think about what those changes mean to us, to the people we interact with and to the larger communities we live in.
The new frontier is text-to-video. Expect it to take everything that was good, bad, or ugly about text-to-image and supersize it. Previous waves of automation technology mostly affected physical work activities, but gen AI is likely to have the biggest impact on knowledge work—especially activities involving decision making and collaboration.

My first job at 20 years of age after graduating from electronics engineering school, cemented my love for discovery and an interest of AI and robots for the future. I worked at Information International in Culver City, the company that created camera technology, electronics design, scanning and computer animation for Westworld Robots.
I was fascinated about AI & Robots, not realizing this first job and my son Ed that was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, would inspire the founding of MindHeart Lab and the development of EduPal Robot, and now the development of the AI World Channel. I never dreamed that I would someday be developing AI intelligent robots that could help kids. I am so humbled to work with such a smart, innovative and passionate team.
Thank you everyone for your support!
